Wisconsin Seminar

Over a two-year period, fellows take part in eight 3-day seminars held in various locations throughout Wisconsin.

STATE GOVERNMENT
Fellows look at how the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of state government deal with public policy issues, examine the structure and function of local government, the role of interest groups in shaping state policy, understanding leadership styles and philosophies of government leaders, and how complex information and facts, as well as perspectives, values and beliefs about fundamental issues are incorporated in state government policy development.

LEADERSHIP & COMMUNITY
Fellows explore and reflect upon: knowledge of self; personal values; personal leadership vision; the ethics of leadership; the external leadership context; and how, through their leadership, fellows can impact others and their communities. This seminar helps fellows develop a personal, holistic leadership philosophy based on personal reflection, leadership theory and concepts.

URBAN/RURAL ISSUES
Fellows explore the differences in issues of urban and rural living as related to the density of people and the complexities of scale. They explore the challenges and problems facing urban communities, identify emerging solutions and expand upon the perception that people have similar abilities, needs and aspirations wherever they live or work.

RIGHTS OF INDIVIDUALS & COMMUNITIES
Fellows reflect upon the interconnection and relationships of individuals and communities as well as their own self interest. They explore conflict between individuals and communities, learn strategies to deal with these issues, and examine the role of leaders.

TECHNOLOGY
Fellows explore various new technologies while they engage in discussions concerning the ethics of technology, the issues for leadership, the impact of technology, and implications for public policy.

GLOBAL ECONOMICS
Fellows explore the impact of the global economy on local communities and international trade. They visit Wisconsin companies conducting international trade, examine leadership and ethical issues, explore the power of organizations that represent people and those that represent money, and explore the macroeconomic changes that bring about social change.

APPRECIATING DIVERSITY
This seminar focuses on leadership in organizations and communities with an emphasis on the positive aspects of diversity. Fellows investigate a broad range of diversity including: age, language, physical characteristics, disability, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, economic status, parental status, education, geographic origin, profession, lifestyle, and religion.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
Fellows explore a number of the key environmental resource issues facing Wisconsin by utilizing a scientific background to understand the substance of environmental management. They examine public policies that address environmental resource issues that help to balance consumptive and non-consumptive uses.
