A native of Bloomington, Indiana, John has been an optometrist in private practice in Madison since 1980. John received his B.A. in Biology in 1975 and an O.D. in Optometry in 1980 from Indiana University.  He completed coursework to earn his Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agent expanded scope of practice from the St. Louis School of Optometry in 1993.  He studied Excimer Laser and Minor Surgical Technologies in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the late 1990s.

John has served the profession of optometry as a member and past chairman of the Wisconsin Optometry Examination Board, member and past president of the Wisconsin Optometric Association (WOA) Board of Directors, and is a clinical examiner for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. He currently is the chairman of the Communications Committee of the WOA and routinely is interviewed for on-air public service announcements regarding optometric care on various local radio stations.  John also provides lectures in optometric clinical care and has been published in the field of optometric science.

John is active in the United Methodist church; performs in community theater and choirs; is a facilitator for the Madison Institute for the Healing of Racism and the Madison Downtown Rotary Youth Ethics Symposium; provides play-by-play announcing for Oregon High School sports teams on Cable Access TV; and announces the Oregon Summerfest Parade.  John serves as president of the Oregon Cable Access Board of Directors, and is a member of the Madison Downtown Rotary Club.
