It is common practice in the cost-benefit analyses of energy policy to discount the value of future benefits and the disvalue of future harms. Philosophers tend to find this abhorrent. Many economists defend it vigorously. And virtually all opponents in this debate talk past one another. This presentation aims to set out the issues in a non-technical way and to get clear on the ethical issues at stake.
Speaker: Paul Kelleher is Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical History & Bioethics and in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to joining the UW faculty, Paul was a postdoctoral fellow in the Program in Ethics and Health at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D in Philosophy from Cornell University in 2008. Paul’s interests are mainly in social and political philosophy and public health ethics.
